This document was drawn up by Dr. Patrizia Parodi (Directorate General of Health Prevention of the Ministry) with the collaboration of Dr. Luigi Gradoni (former Research director of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and member of the GSLC) to update the level of information attached to the surveillance, as requested by the Regional Office for Europe of the World Health Organization to countries with mandatory notification of human leishmaniasis, such as Italy. The circular, being primarily intended for the competent Departments of the Regions and Autonomous Provinces, was enriched with entomological information and data on the spread of canine leishmaniasis. The latter were derived from the official reports of the National Reference Center for Leishmaniases - C.Re.Na.L., established at the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Sicily.
